When to refer

From a single implant to the whole mouth

No implant case is too simple to send. There's real satisfaction in doing the basics well.

IMPLANTS

Straightforward

A single missing tooth

Single implants, planned with a 3D cone beam CT scan and weighed carefully against other options.

IMPLANTS

Advanced

Several teeth, or a whole arch

Larger implant cases and full-mouth rehabilitation.

IMPLANTS

When things go wrong

Implant complications

Failed implants and failed prostheses, screw removal, and patients with more than one implant system.

RESTORATIVE

Whole mouth

A failing dentition

Looking at the whole mouth and how it is interlinked, then planning treatment in sequence.

GUMS

Periodontics

Periodontitis

Assessment, non-surgical and surgical treatment, including crown lengthening and plastic periodontal surgery.

GUMS

Periodontics

Recession

Assessment, periodontal plastic surgery and periodontal prostheses.

TOOTHWEAR

Restorative

Worn teeth

Composite build-ups, injectable and conventional, and indirect restorations.

AESTHETICS

Anterior teeth

Demanding smiles

Single missing anterior teeth in patients with high smile lines, and cases that need several disciplines together.

Second opinions

Ask first

If you're not sure whether it's a referral, send it to the practice's Tele-Dentist service or give us a call.

How to ask

After you refer

Your patient, looked after together.

You hear from me at each stage, and your patient comes back to you.

Chris planning a case with colleagues around a table
  1. You refer

Through the practice's referral portal or by letter. Patients can also refer themselves.

  2. The practice books your patient

The practice manager checks the referral reaches the right specialist. Our referral coordinator contacts your patient, explains the process and cost, and books the appointment. You receive confirmation.

  3. First visit

I take a history, examine, and discuss your patient's priorities. I then write to you with my initial thoughts.

  4. Planning visit

I take the records needed for a diagnosis and plan: photographs, an intraoral scan, radiographs and CBCT as required, and a six-point pocket chart. You receive a copy of my report, with findings, diagnoses, treatment options and costs.

  5. Shared care

I encourage your patient to discuss the plan with you, and to share care between us where that's appropriate. Their choice is always respected.

  6. Back to you

I don't take on general patients. After treatment, I'll write to you with a summary of what's been provided and carry out reviews at appropriate time points, but your patient returns to you.

I'm happy to discuss any case.

How I work

  • I listen first. What matters to you and your patient is considered in any plan.
  • I treat patients and colleagues the way I'd want to be treated: honestly, openly and without judgement.
  • You hear from me in writing after the first visit, receive a copy of the full plan, and hear from me again when treatment is complete.
  • Your patient stays your patient.

Periodontal reassessment: a considered approach

A short piece for referring dentists on how we judge success after periodontal treatment. It ends with this question.

Full piece to follow.
Have we reduced disease to a level that can be predictably maintained for this patient?
